Dr. Haider Abdel Shafi Center for Culture and Development held a workshop entitled ” Political decline and fragmentation of the Palestinian national identity “, hosting researcher Tayseer Muhaisen.

The workshop, attended by a group of youth, intellectuals and civil society activists, was implemented after the publication of the second issue of Citizenship Journal, funded by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation of Freedom.

The workshop began with a welcoming speech from Mr. Mohsen Abu Ramadan, Director of HCCD and Chief editor of the Journal, in which he stressed the importance of issuing this Journal and the need for ​​citizenship value based on equality and non-discrimination in a society for the guarantee of rights, civil peace and society, while Mr. Talal Abu Rukba, Manager Editor, focused on the identity and linked it to the concept of citizenship.

On the other hand, Ms. Rana Al-Amad, Palestine Desk manager at the Friedrich Naumann Foundation, expressed her happiness for implementing this workshop and pleased in working with HCCD which works with youth sector and aims to promote the values of citizenship, democracy, gender, participation and other human rights concepts, while Mr. Basel Jaber, Project Assistant at Friedrich Naumann Foundation, pointed out the importance of this workshop, which deals with a central topic of the Palestinian political system.

On the other hand, the researcher Mr. Tayseer Muhaisen starting his presentation by talking about the context of the development of the Palestinian identity and the challenges it faced and the main joints that affected it, stressing the dangers of division.

Also, he pointed out that the identity faces threats due to division and its repercussions on the structures of power and the state of public freedoms, which means the need to work on rebuilding the collective awareness of the cultural components based on the idea of ​​Palestinian nationalism.

At the end of the workshop, some questions were raised from the participants, who all stressed the need to maintain civil peace and the concept of citizenship and to rebuild the Palestinian political system on a democratic and participatory basis.
